The Berlin Philharmonic Octet conveys Schubert's expressions with a steady control over their ebb and flow, and these select virtuosi give the work more than a little panache, especially in the jaunty Allegros. This 1998 performance was capably recorded, with such a focused sound that the key clicks of the clarinet are plainly audible, and some of the strings' attacks have a pronounced percussive quality that lends an edge to the otherwise sweet ensemble blend. Schuberts Octet for five strings and three winds, considered the founding work of this instrumental genre of chamber music, was programmed alongside a world premiere by Toshio Hosokawa and an almost forgotten piece for the same formation by Hugo Kaun. All three works were performed by one of the orchestras most venerable chamber music formations: the Philharmonic Octet Berlin. Philharmonic String Octet Berlin. Philharmonische Streichersolisten.
