Album station. Symphony No. Largo - Allegro vivace. Charles Munch, Franz Schubert, Boston Symphony Orchestra. The Symphony No. 104 in D major H. 1104 is Joseph Haydn's final symphony. It is the last of the twelve London symphonies, and is known somewhat arbitrarily, given the existence of eleven others as the London Symphony. In Germany it is commonly known as the Salomon Symphony after Johann Peter Salomon, who arranged Haydn's two tours of London, even though it is one of three of the last twelve symphonies written for Viotti's Opera Concerts, rather than for Salomon. Programmed by Munch during his years at the Boston Symphony but never recorded, his. Saint-Saens: Symphony No. 3 In C Minor, Op. 78 - Charles Munch Conducting The Boston Symphony Orchestra. Musically, the 80 Boston Symphony sounds clearer, lither and more agile than the 40-piece Swedish Chamber Orchestra. This is not a fair comparison, of course. However, just listen to the opening of the final movement of the C-major played by BostonMunch and then SCODausgaard in the former, the fiendishly difficult strings and ensemble just leap off the page. Sonically, there is no comparison either. Although the BSOMunch can sound a bit congested and flustered at peaks, this recording just kicks down the stage in all directions. By comparison, the modern recordings - not one of BIS's best efforts, I feel - is almost comically flat, congealed and unfocussed
